Love

Love comes in many guises and can soothe, baffle, hurt, create and destroy.

The unconditional love of a parent to a child will evolve into a trusting bond that can help to guide, nurture and give confidence to new eyes trying to make sense of the world around them. Trying to understand the protocols, societal demands, politics, attraction and disgust can be exhausting and confusing.

We all need a hand to hold at some point in our lives: it might be through a belief, faith or religion but it’s more often that not the hand of a parent, sibling, friend or lover who gives us meaning and strength to face the uncertainty of the day.

I have the most amazing love that any mother could ask for and that is from my two incredible daughters who have stood by me no matter what. They have laughed with me, cried with me and drunk all the good stuff. We have cooked together, shopped, cycled, walked, swam, sung and danced.

I hear a song on the radio that takes me back to a shared time when we sang on car journeys, and I text them to let them know that I am thinking of them. Earlier today it was Hanson MMbop on Jo Wiley , and brought back so many happy memories. We create our playlists based on songs from decades ago that I have introduced them to, and they in turn share their love of music with me. Whenever we spend time together I am greedy for wanting more – of their youthfulness, their opinions on the world, their humour and their time.

Unconditional love is not a given, and I never take the love of my girls for granted. I have coaxed it, surrounded it with good things, given enough, not asked for too much in return and love has blossomed.

Later this summer we are planning to spend time together in London and I honestly can’t wait.

Well, as I write this I have just had a Facebook prompt that I have a memory with T to look back on today and it says this: ‘3 May 2012 at 20:08 Not gonna lie, that Sinead O’Connor album is pretty bloody good. Can’t stop listening.’

We are all 3 intrinsically connected and I value that more than anything else in this world.

Love – a poem

Take a moment and look all around,

stand quite still, make no sound.

Breathe in the scent from the morning dew,

look at the day through the eyes that you

have created and loved and adore,

and give a little bit but ask no more.
